EPA Region 2 Highlights Accomplishments Since April
Aug 11, 2025
New York, N.Y. - EPA Region 2 continues to deliver measurable results that are improving human health and environmental quality across the Northeast and Caribbean. From Superfund cleanups and stronger drinking water protections to a new action plan for Long Island Sound, these milestones, highlighted in EPA Headquarters’ latest "100 environmental actions in 100 days", demonstrate meaningful progress for people in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“Every one of these accomplishments translates to cleaner air, cleaner water and more land ready for productive use across our Region,” said Regional Administrator Michael Martucci. “We’re delivering on Administrator Lee Zeldin’s promise of progress for the American people.”
Delivering Clean Land
- Historic Potteries, Trenton—added to the National Priorities List, unlocking federal resources for long-awaited cleanup.
- Waldwick Mercury & American Cyanamid, NJ—removed mercury contamination and 2,700 tons of toxic acid, respectively, protecting nearby communities.
- Wolff-Alport, Queens—began excavating radiologically contaminated soil at this former rare-earth processing site.
- Emergency actions—demolished asbestos-laden structures at the ATP site (Paterson, NJ), addressed PFAS at Route 31 (Washington Township, NJ) and launched an emergency removal at Cooper Chemical (Long Valley, NJ).
- Superfund follow-through—completed ten five-year reviews to ensure existing NPL remedies remain protective.
- Toxic PCB cleanups—approved more than ten PCB remediation plans for facilities in NY and NJ.
Delivering Clean Air and Water
- State Implementation Plans—cleared two backlogged SIPs, strengthening air-quality protections in NY and NJ.
- Safe Drinking Water Act enforcement—issued 157 compliance orders to water systems in NY and NJ, prompting corrections that safeguard millions of residents.
- Infrastructure investment—awarded nearly $45 million to 25 communities for drinking-water, wastewater and storm-water upgrades.
- Long Island Sound—finalized a comprehensive conservation and management plan that charts a cleaner, healthier future for the estuary.
- New York Harbor dredging—with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, launched the siting process for a new placement area for dredged material, ensuring a vibrant port and a protected marine environment.
These achievements complement ongoing work in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, from supporting safe energy production to supporting drinking-water infrastructure and demonstrate EPA Region 2’s commitment to cooperative federalism and practical environmental stewardship.
