Pollution Prevention

Pollution Prevention essentially means eliminating or reducing the amount and toxicity of potentially harmful substances at their sources, prior to generation, treatment, off-site recycling or disposal.

Pollution Prevention BMPsPollution Prevention emphasizes preventing or minimizing pollution, rather than controlling it once it is generated. Pollution from construction projects and industrial sites can fall into numerous catagories including hazardous and toxic waste, sanitary waste, oil and grease, pesticides, track-out and concrete washout.

Pollution Prevention can be accomplished on a project site by the following:

  • Implement and practice Pollution Prevention Best Management Practices (BMPs) which will reduce or eliminate the addition of pollutants to stormwater discharges.
  • Observe and analyze potential project site pollutant sources.
  • Educate and implement proper handling and/or waste disposal practices.
  • Employee education of Polliution Prevention measures.
  • Implementing other principles and practices that will add to the awareness and precautionary measures of pollutants leaving a project site.

Some mandatory Principles and Practices of Pollution Prevention include: (1) Good Housekeeping; (2) Material Storage; (3) Concrete Washout; (4) Spill Reporting; (5) Phasing and Sequencing BMPs; (6) Dust Control; and (7) Track-Out.
